From Historic Mesa to Community Destination: Durango Builds Access to the Future
At Durango Mesa Park in Colorado, CRH companies played a key role in transforming a historic landscape into a future community destination.

Opening New Access to
Ewing Mesa
Long before it became known as Ewing Mesa or Durango Mesa Park, this land played an important role in Durango’s early industries, from coal mining and gravel operations to agriculture and grazing. Today it is entering a new chapter, as the Durango Mesa Park Foundation works to transform the area into a public destination that honors its history and preserves its open spaces.
This vision began taking shape through major infrastructure improvements in 2025, including a new intersection at Colorado Highway 3 and Ewing Mesa Road as well as the reconstruction of approximately 1.4 miles of Ewing Mesa Road into the future park.
Leveraging CRH’s
Connected Portfolio
Four Corners Materials, a CRH company, completed the roadway reconstruction and installed a new waterline extending from 3rd Street and 8th Avenue into the park. Enhancements also included drainage improvements, stormwater detention ponds, curbed median islands, guardrail, landscaping and traffic control.
Crews excavated 106,388 cubic yards of unclassified material and oversaw placement of more than 26,000 tons of Class 2 and Class 6 aggregate base and 7,100 tons of hot mix asphalt. Installing the new waterline required approximately 600 feet of boring, reaching depths up to 65 feet.
CRH Company, Oldcastle Infrastructure, also incorporated six precast drop inlets into the design to collect excess stormwater runoff. This brought together two CRH companies on the project, demonstrating the strength of our connected portfolio.
Four Corners Materials partnered with Canyon Construction to complete a 40-foot auger bore beneath large-diameter storm and raw water lines. The approach helped protect existing infrastructure while reducing the need for deep utility trenching, creating a safer work environment for crews.
Turning Recycled Material into a Resource
Sustainability was an important consideration throughout the project. Four Corners Materials validated the performance of recycled concrete base and demonstrated how innovative material solutions can meet specifications while advancing circular construction practices.
The recycled concrete was approved for use as Class 2 aggregate base, allowing approximately two-thirds of the aggregate used on the project to come from recycled sources.

With the roadway and supporting infrastructure now complete, the Ewing Mesa Road Project represents an important step toward achieving the broader vision for Durango Mesa Park.
