From Gridlock to Flowing Freeway: Utah County Improves Daily Travel

Outgrowing the Roads System

For decades, residents along the Wasatch Front in the Salt Lake and Utah Valleys have relied on a highway system that was originally designed to support the state’s population in the 1960s. Utah’s continued population growth has overwhelmed this aging infrastructure, which now fails to meet the demands of commuters traveling between the valleys for work, recreation and everything in between.

Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) projects that by 2050, nearly 150,000 motorists will use this highway system daily. Traffic congestion can leave residents facing gridlock, making it difficult to reach their destinations while accidents can shut down major roadways for extended periods.

Ahead of Schedule, Above Expectations

Staker Parson Materials & Construction (Staker Parson), a CRH Company, was contracted by the UDOT to complete a four-mile extension of the Mountain View Corridor project. This $290.2 million design-build road construction project delivered a new two-lane highway to support the rapidly growing communities on the west side of the Utah Valley. This included a network of supporting infrastructure made up of five vehicle bridges, five pedestrian bridges, eight box structures and five miles of multi-use trails for pedestrians and cyclists.

Finishing the project four months ahead of schedule, Staker Parson crews moved 1.3 million cubic yards of earthwork, installed 20,000 linear feet of underground water drainage utilities and incorporated more than 800,000 tons of roadway aggregates, poured 13,000 cubic yards of ready mixed concrete for bridges and culverts and placed 84,000 tons of hot-mix asphalt.

Throughout construction, the team repurposed on-site materials, such as excavated boulders used for drainage, reducing waste and overall costs.

Connecting Commuters to What Moves Them Most

Mountain View Corridor officially opened its first phase of the 35-mile-long highway in December 2025, an important milestone for the continuous route that spans from Interstate-80 in Salt Lake County to State Route 73 in Utah County. The road expansion is estimated to relieve current traffic conditions by 75% and transform one of the state’s most congested travel routes into an efficient corridor.

Beyond the two-lane highway extension, the project will connect residents to commerce and unique Utah landscapes.

Partnerships that Deliver Across Our Connected Portfolio

Staker Parson’s success was amplified by CRH’s connected portfolio by sourcing 13,000 cubic yards of ready mixed concrete from CRH company Jack B. Parson Ready Mix Concrete (JBP) and 130,000 cubic yards of cement powder from CRH Company Ash Grove. Additionally, 800 feet of 48” Class 3 Reinforced Concrete Pipe (RCP) and three large and complex hydrodynamic separator drainage structures were supplied by CRH Company Oldcastle Infrastructure. CRH companies leveraged their expertise and resources, delivering coordinated solutions that support customers at every stage of a project, from materials sourcing to final construction.

By improving mobility, expanding transportation options and providing safer routes, the corridor enhances how commuters experience their communities and access the state’s renowned outdoor geography, creating a transportation system that will serve future generations while showcasing all that Utah Valley has to offer. The project was recognized by the International Partnering Institute with a silver award in the $250 million-plus Infrastructure Projects category, highlighting the power of collaboration among teams, partners and stakeholders in delivering impactful infrastructure improvements.
