The future of infrastructure will be measured by how it performs
For decades, infrastructure has been measured in miles, tons and lanes. Those metrics still matter, but they are no longer enough. What matters next is performance:
- Making materials last longer and go further, without compromising quality,
- Anticipating failures before they happen, to reduce reactive repairs,
- Adapting to greater volume and more extreme conditions.
Thankfully, this shift is already underway. Infrastructure is becoming more connected, more responsive and more intelligent, adapting to the challenges of today, and the expectations of tomorrow.
The roads of our future
Roads helped build America’s past, but future roads must do more than carry people and goods. They must sense, predict and adapt. Future roads will be:
- more responsive, via embedded sensors and edge-AI which will assess condition, traffic and weather and trigger earlier intervention before failures happen, improving safety and reducing lifecycle cost,
- maximize available resources, by default, every time. Circular materials, low-temperature production and next-gen binders will become standard, reducing overall lifecycle emissions without sacrificing performance, and
- autonomous and electrified, at scale, via standardized markings and integrated energy management.
In the future, the most valuable road won’t be the one that’s built the farthest, nor the fastest, but the one that performs the longest, with the least reactive repairs.
The water systems of our future
Today’s water systems power homes and businesses, and underpin public health, delivering the water our communities rely on every day. But many were built for a different era and today, leaving us with tired and aging assets facing more volatile weather – putting more pressure on their reliability, cost and resilience.
But a quiet technological revolution is changing all that and the next generation of water systems will be:
- intelligent, with integrated AI sensors that optimize flow and respond to disruption, in real time,
- predictive, using digital tools that identify the location, size and likelihood of leaks and failures before they even happen, and
- adaptive, with an ability to handle extreme weather conditions, from flooding to drought.
The data centers of our future
The demand for data centers will continue to grow, but how and where these structures are built in the next 250 years will change greatly. The future points toward data centers with:
- integrated energy systems, including waste heat recovery, storage and smarter grid interaction, to reduce their reliance on an already strained grid,
- built-in water resilience, including cooling systems designed for lower consumption and closed-loop use, so they give back what they use, and
- less impact on surrounding environment, including more modular builds that can be erected faster, and with less impact on surrounding communities, and with more efficient, lower-carbon and aesthetically pleasing materials.
Combined, the systems of our future and the trends that will shape them point to a broad transformation, from building more, to building better.
America’s 250th anniversary is a pivotal moment, to reflect on where we’ve come from, and to think about where we want to go next. If the last 250 years were about expansion, the next 250 will be about performance. And for future generations, that may be the most important thing we build.
