Water is an essential resource for life and the economy.

We are focused on helping our customers and communities to solve complex water challenges. Our innovative solutions create value for all, enabling water resilient communities.

We are scaling our products, services, and solutions to build and upgrade essential water infrastructure. This includes expanding and advancing delivery of our infrastructure solutions for clean water, wastewater treatment, groundwater recharging, stormwater management and flood defenses. We are also innovating and partnering to identify and deploy new technologies for efficient water management and leak detection. In addition, we are working to conserve, efficiently manage and recycle water at our own operations.

Innovating on Stormwater Management

At CRH, we are addressing our customers' complex challenges. Renton, Washington, needed a solution to protect neighborhoods from flooding and deal with pollutants in stormwater runoff. CRH companies across our Americas Division worked together to provide an integrated stormwater management solution. Oldcastle Infrastructure created a unique BioPod™ system delivering high-capacity bio-filtration, Ash Grove provided the cement and ICON Materials customized a mix of aggregates enabling the treated, cleaned water to be absorbed into the ground.

Solving Complex Customer Challenges

Stradal and Hydro International, both in CRH's International Division, partnered on a water infrastructure upgrade for the city of Strasbourg in France, who was experiencing significant rainfall and a threat of flooding compounded by aging infrastructure. This required a solution to disconnect the stormwater network from the existing wastewater system, re-routing it to the river while meeting strict environmental regulations. The solution combined several water treatment systems with structural engineering for bespoke products to address the customer’s needs.

Innovating to Solve Customer Challenges

Oldcastle Infrastructure, in CRH’s Americas Division, supported Los Angeles County to address challenges identified with their stormwater management. Collaborating with Pre-con Products, Oldcastle Infrastructure provided system customizations including the Hydro DryScreen to capture stormwater trash, organic matter and sediment, and Pre-con Products' StormPrism modular underground stormwater units. These improvements made the system significantly easier to maintain, reducing operational downtime, and minimizing safety risks.

Advancing Collaboration on Water

In 2024, CRH sponsored and participated in an important roundtable discussion on “Developing Water Infrastructure Systems for Greater Resilience”. We joined the World Environment Center (now Tandem Global) and Jacobs Engineering to discuss investment in resilient water infrastructure systems, emerging technologies and the role of nature-based solutions. The discussions highlighted best practice and the vital role of collaboration and partnerships in improving water infrastructure resilience and sustainability.

Recycling Water at Our Sites

Lyman-Richey Corporation, in CRH’s Americas Division, recently installed a new filtration system that will enable them to recycle water at their Elkhorn concrete plant, which used an estimated 25.3 million liters of water in 2024 for production. The filtration system is designed to remove all particles greater than 40 microns allowing water from an on-site retention pond to be recycled to produce concrete products and in the site’s readymixed concrete truck wash system.

Our Targets and Progress

2030 target: 100% of our operating companies to have water management plans in place

Our business depends on water for numerous processes and we are continuing to take action to conserve and use water resources responsibly.

Our 2024 performance:

  • 96% of our operating companies had water management plans in place
New target: Engage in collective action to deliver transformational outcomes for 5 at-risk water catchments by 2030.

For 2025, we created a new target focused on identifying opportunities to work with external stakeholders in at-risk water catchments, through our water management and technologies, to share resources and minimize water risk.
