Energy efficiency plays a central role in achieving a low-carbon economy by reducing energy demand and lowering energy-related emissions.

Targeting energy reduction

Energy efficiency and increasing the use of renewable energy are crucial to progress towards our ambition for carbon neutrality along the cement and concrete value chain and to securing reliable future energy resources for society.

Investing in renewable energy

We are actively targeting the increase of renewable electricity across our operations. At our Leviat site in Melbourne, Australia, a 36kW Solar PV System was installed which will cut energy costs on site by 35% and prevent 52 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Contributing to renewable energy in our value chain

As a leader within our industry, we are providing the building materials that are needed to expand the world’s renewable energy generation capacity. For example, HALFEN Spain, part of our Building Products Division, has been providing essential materials for precast towers for wind-turbines across Spain, Mexico and Argentina.

Driving actions for carbon neutrality

Our companies are leading the transition to using renewable energy to power their transport fleets. For example, Tarmac, part of our Europe Materials Division, has committed to transitioning its fleet of corporate cars and vans to electric vehicles by 2030.

Our objectives and targets

To decrease our contribution to climate change, we are investing in optimising energy and process efficiencies as well as replacing fossil fuel-based energy with renewable biomass sources.

Our actions and progress

We have set energy reduction targets and programmes across our business as part of our focus on continuous improvement in energy efficiency. We are also actively increasing renewable electricity use across our operations. To do this, our renewable energy teams pursue reliable future energy resources through purchasing agreements and partnering with organisations to install renewable energy sources.

  • 99% of our energy use is covered by formal energy reduction targets and programmes
  • 217 GWh of energy was saved through these programmes in 2020
  • Over 50% of energy requirements in our cement plants in Europe was met by alternative fuels
  • An increasing number of our operating companies are joining our “CRH 100% Club”, where 100% of the electricity used in their processes comes from renewable sources

In addition to using renewable energy in our processes, our products are essential in constructing the foundations for solar and wind renewable energy installations.
