At a Glance

With a broad portfolio of businesses and a geographic reach that spans 19 countries in Europe and three in Asia, our Europe Materials business is highly integrated.

Our integrated business model means that we can maximise the use of our assets, through a combination of self-supply to our own downstream operations as well as sales to our customers. We also invest in other bolt-on businesses – with a lower capital requirement – as we go. This means we are competitive in all individual product lines and our combined business delivers a stronger return on assets and more cash.

What we do

We continuously focus on value creation, seeking to optimise our asset base and maximise synergies across our businesses while looking for opportunities to extend and strengthen our positions in regional markets.

This approach enables our businesses to leverage the benefits of scale and best practice, while differentiating themselves in local markets by understanding and meeting the unique needs of their local customers.

Europe Materials customers typically range from national, regional and local governments, to building contractors and other construction product and service providers.

The materials we supply

Our materials are founded in resource-backed assets, which support the manufacture and supply of aggregates, lime, cement, readymixed concrete, concrete products and asphalt.

These materials are used extensively in a wide range of construction applications, from major public road and infrastructure projects, to the development and refurbishment of commercial buildings and residential communities.

They are supplied as a range of products for use in general construction and engineering projects as well as in a variety of additional CRH product lines including asphalt, readymixed concrete, infrastructure products, architectural products, and bagged mortars and concrete mixes.

Asphalt

Asphalt is primarily used in road surfacing and other transport infrastructure including airport runways. It consists of aggregates bound together with bitumen, a by-product of the oil industry. Our key customers include government and local authorities who are responsible for the construction and maintenance of road networks. In order to minimise emissions, we use recycled materials and innovative technologies. 100% of asphalt is recyclable for future uses.

Paving & Construction

In North America and parts of Europe, we offer end-to-end pavement installation services, covering everything from roads and highways to shopping malls to runways. A significant portion of our paving work is repair and maintenance of roadways due to regular wear and tear caused by heavy axle traffic and freeze thaw impact on road surfaces. We provide the materials, crews, equipment and expertise needed for preparation, paving and maintenance of traffic flows during the construction phase.
