Once finished in 2024, the Hoorn City Beach will be the largest urban beach in the Netherlands. Constructed along the shore of the Markermeer lake, the new beach will come with footpaths, bridges, parking facilities for cars and bicycles, sports fields, a bathing jetty and several play areas for children, creating a wonderful amenity for the local community.

The challenge

In order to create the new beach area – and make it accessible to the public – this project required bespoke concrete solutions that could be integrated into existing dykes that border the lake, while being hardy enough to withstand both extremes of weather and heavy footfall. All of this made for an incredibly complex project, for which a reliable supplier of bespoke concrete solutions – including stairs of varying dimensions – was required.

The solution

CRH is a leading provider of innovative and sustainable outdoor living solutions in Europe, integrating specialised materials, products and design features to re-model and enhance the quality of public spaces, such as the Hoorn City Beach.

Struyk Verwo Infra, A CRH Company, is supplying 14 custom-made concrete stairs to provide access to the beach, as well as extensive concrete seating and other solid features that will allow the parking areas to be planted, adding to the aesthetics of the build.
